Peter Obi Moved By Gold-Winning Athlete’s Tears For Nigeria In Tweet About Leaders

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party Peter Obi on Monday congratulated Tobi Amusan on winning gold at the women’s 100m hurdles at World Athletics Championship in Oregon, US.

Amusan, 25, on Sunday clocked an incredible 12.06 seconds, smashing her world record in the semi-final where she clocked 12.12 seconds.

The Ijedu-Ode-born sprinter could not hold back tears on the podium while the Nigeria national anthem was ongoing.

Mr Obi said Amusan’s tears showed that Nigeria needs leaders.

“I sincerely congratulate Tobi Amusan on winning the 100M hurdles gold medal and setting a world record.

“Her tears at the ceremony podium while the Nigerian anthem played, connects that our dear country needs leaders to match the talents and ambitions of her youths,” he tweeted.

Other top presidential candidates Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar have also congratulated Amusan.

Oregon 2022 is Amusan’s third appearance at the World Championships after making her debut in London in 2017 where she made the semi-finals before finishing fourth in the final in Doha in 2019. She also placed fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.
