A Washington DC-based chartered Accountant, Chief Daniel Ekeh, has called on the federal government to initiate policies that will attract Nigerians in Diaspora to the country as tourists and investors as a veritable means of improving Foreign Direct Investment, FDI.
While noting that Foreign Direct Investment is not only when Chinese or Americans come into the country to establish factories, he said remittance from Nigerians in Diaspora back to the country is a huge FDI.
In an interview with IgbereTV, he therefore urged that policies that will make it easier for a little percentage of the over 20 million Nigerians in foreign land to be attracted as investors without so much bottlenecks.
Chief Ekeh also expressed concern over the state of the Nigerian economy which he said is in dire need of urgent intervention.
He insisted that there is need to think outside the box to move the country’s economy forward, noting that the 27th economic summit hosted in 2021 which had as the theme, “Securing Our Future: The Fierce Urgency of Now” is an indication that the country has realised the need to do something about the economy to avert looming troubles.
He commended the efforts of Nigerians in Diaspora for the large chunk of funds they have remitted back to the country which has further strengthened the economy.
“In 2018, Nigerians in Diaspora remitted $24.3 billion into Nigeria.
“In 2019, they remitted $23.81 billion.
“In 2020, they remitted $17.21 billion. This was low because of the COVID-19 outbreak” he said.
