Democracy: Islamic Group Knocks Makinde, Southwest For Protesting Against Buhari

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for seemingly joining Saturday’s Democracy Day protest in Ibadan.

Mr Makinde, who was driving past, stopped and commended the protesters at Bodija area for their peaceful conduct, reminding them that it is their right to call the government to question. The demonstrators were protesting against bad governance.

However, in a statement on Monday, MURIC director Prof. Ishaq Akintola said, “The most shameful, most reprehensible and most preposterous was the open participation of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State who marched on the streets of Ibadan with protesters chanting ‘Buhari Must Go.’”

“It is most naïve for a sitting executive governor who came into office riding on the back of democracy to join a group seeking the removal of a democratically elected president through undemocratic means.

“It was a great disservice to the memory of M.K.O. Abiola. Seyi Makinde is an ingrate nulli secundus. He should apologise to Nigerians for his immature behavior,” he added.

MURIC condemned in its entirety the protests staged across major cities in the country, especially south-west, describing the protesters as “certificated ingrates, rebellious subjects and articulated enemies of peace”.

The group argued that the protesters had no moral ground to protest on June 12 since it was President Muhammadu Buhari who gave it official recognition when all past leaders especially Olusegun Obasanjo had refused to do so.

MURIC, however, commended the police for handling the protests professionally without any casualties.
