Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh has called for the release of Ghanaian actress Akuapem Poloo who was last week sentenced to 90 days imprisonment for posting a nude picture she took with her young son on social media last year.
Tonto made a case for her embattled colleague in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
According to her, “no one can tell a mother how to bring up her child,” unless the child is being hurt.
The 35-year-old said she saw no hurt in what Akuapem Poloo did by taking unclad pictures with her child.
Describing the Ghanaian’s act as morally wrong and classless, Tonto said what she did was not bad enough to send her to jail for.
The mother of one, therefore, called on Nigerians to sign an online petition to get her fellow single mum back home.
Born Rosemund Brown, the convicted actress on June 30 2020 posted a nude picture of her and her son on Instagram to celebrates his seventh birthday.
With the boy looking directly at her, she wrote in the post: “I am naked in front of you because this is how naked I was giving birth to you, so in case you find me lying somewhere, don’t pass by, but see me as your mum who brought you to life.”
The indiscretion was heavily criticised across Ghana and beyond.
A group known as Child Rights International petitioned the Ghanaian Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID), accusing the actress of abuse of a child’s rights to privacy and dignity.
The police investigated the matter and charged her to court for publication of obscene material and domestic violence.
Despite pleading for mercy, the actress was sentenced to 90 days in jail, with the female judge expressing discontent at what she described as the alarming rate of nudity in the country’s social media space.
