Reactions As Twitter Picks Ghana As African Headquarters

Nigerians have taken to social media to make their opinions known after Twitter announced its decision to make Ghana the company’s African headquarters.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey revealed on Monday that the tech company had set up an office in Africa and it would be in Ghana.

“Twitter is now present on the continent. Thank you Ghana and President Nana Akufo-Addo,” he tweeted.

Reacting, Mr Akufo-Addo thanked Twitter for its decision, adding that he had met with Mr Dorsey and was confident the move would be the beginning of new things.

Akufo-Addo tweeted, “The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is excellent news. The government and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country.”

Some Nigerians believe the Nigerian government’s tough stance against social media usage, aided by a member of the ruling party the All Progressives Congress Adamu Garba who sued Dorsey last year for alleged interference in Nigeria’s polity, drove Twitter into Ghana’s arms.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari’s aide Tolu Ogunlesi downplayed the development, saying Facebook had also announced that it would be opening an office in Lagos.

“Ghana got Twitter, Nigeria got Facebook (operational H2 2021). God be praised. Let’s be happy for each other. Not everything is fight, dears. Ghana, congratulations,” he tweeted.

Facebook’s African headquarters is in South Africa.
