Major-General Ibrahim Attahiru on Thursday resumed duty as the new chief of army staff.
The handover ceremony was held at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Attahiru takes over from Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai who resigned on Monday.
Attahiru is expected to lead the army in a resurgent fight against terrorism particularly in the northern part of the country.
