Protest Stalls Announcement Of New VC For University Of Ibadan

The University of Ibadan (UI) has suspended the announcement of its next vice-chancellor following a protest by some members of staff on Wednesday.

Chairman of the university council Joshua Waklek announced this to the non-academic staff who besieged the council chambers.

Waklek promised to meet with the protesting staff on Friday to look into their demands.

The protesters blocked the university gates alleging plan to impose one of the six candidates selected for the position Prof. Kayode Adebowale.

They also rejected Prof. Olusegun Mimiko, alleging he treated staff unfairly when he was vice-chancellor of Ondo State University, Akungba-Akoko between 2010 and 2015.

Members of the non-teaching staff led by the chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) Wale Akinremi and his Non-Teaching Staff Union (NASU) counterpart Malachy Etim have vowed not to suspend their protest until there is a formal letter annulling the process of appointing the next vice-chancellor.
