Lockdown: Gov Akeredolu Reverses Decision To Reopen Churches

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has announced a reversal of the decision to relax restrictions for religious gatherings in celebration of Easter.

The governor said in a tweet on Saturday that the decision was revisited during a meeting with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Nigerians have been raising concerns that allowing large gatherings for religious purposes could jeopardise efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

β€œI’ve heard you all and your concerns on the need to #LockDownOndo,” Mr Akeredolu wrote.

β€œI have just concluded a meeting with CAN and we have resolved that the services will not hold again. Thanks for your concerns. Stay blessed and Happy Easter to all.”

Ondo State Government had on April 8 partially relaxed the ban on religious activities in the state to allow Christian residents attend Easter Sunday services.

The services were to hold between 7am and 12 noon on April 12 only.

Ondo recorded its second COVID-19 case on Friday.
