COVID-19: In Lagos, 34 Joggers Sentenced For Violating Lockdown Rule

A Magistrate Court in Lagos has sentenced 34 persons to fourteen-day quarantine and a month community service for violating the lockdown directives ordered by the federal government.

The 34 were arrested on Wednesday while participating in a fitness exercise along a major expressway. The state government had banned gatherings that exceed 20 people.

The court subsequently convicted them on a charge of working out in a group larger that 20 persons. They are to be quarantined at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Yaba or any government assigned facility.

Three of the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge. As of April 8 midday, Nigeria has confirmed 254 coronavirus cases, 130 of which were in Lagos alone.

Igbere TV had earlier reported that residents violated the lockdown order of the federal government by taking part in group exercise sessions.

The incident was reported to have occurred at Aruna, Agric axis, Ikorodu road and also Gbagada on Tuesday, April 7.

A court earlier this week convicted popular entertainer, Funke Akindele and her husband for holding a party in their home despite the lockdown.
