The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, and the University of Ibadan (UI) have announced the closure of the varsities until further notice.
This comes after the Federal Government on Thursday ordered all public tertiary institutions and unity schools to shut down to forestall the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
OAU spokesman, Abiodun Olarewaju, said in a statement on Friday that students in the varsityโs hostels are expected to start leaving by Monday.
โAll students of the university have been directed to proceed on a break, and those in the universityโs halls of residence have been asked to vacate their hostels and go home,โ the statement read.
โAccordingly, students are expected to be leaving their hostels and the campus beginning from Monday, March 23, 2020, latest by 5:00 pm.
โParents and guardians of our students are advised to ensure that their children and wards comply fully with the order.โ
OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, also ordered โthe suspension of all local, national and international conferences, seminars or workshops, scheduled to hold in the University, until further notice.โ
On the other hand, Vice Chancellor of UI, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, announced the closure on behalf of the Senate of the institution in a statement on Friday.
Students are to vacate the premises effective from Friday.
โThe institution will remain closed to students until further notice,โ the VC said in a special bulletin signed by UI Registrar, Olubunmi Faluyi.
โHowever, the Studentsโ Affairs Division of the University will see to any need to make special arrangements for international students who are unable to vacate their hostels.โ
The vice-chancellor advised primary and secondary schools located within the campus of the institution to close until the pandemic is brought under control.
