2019 has come to an end, so it’s time to look at some of the most memorable moments in tech. Take a look below to find out more.
Daughters of Chibok Wins Best VR Story
Daughters of Chibok was shown at the Venice Film Festival. It’s one of the oldest and biggest film festivals in the entire world and it tells the story of a young girl called Yana Galang. She was one of the girls who was kidnapped from a school in the year 2014. Nigeria and Africa were represented at the event along 12 VR movies. The documentary was actually the first VR production to come out of Africa, that went on to win an event in the country. Some believe that the industry is not getting enough attention from local investors but it would appear that a lot of the growth is coming from outside the country. All in all, it’s not surprising to see that a movie from Africa won the award because the tech industry is thriving right now. Look at any online casino in Nigeria and you’ll see that growth is booming, and so is the sports industry too.
Canal+ Acquire iROKOtv
The company was founded by the famous Mary Njoku and it was actually incubated by iROKOtv. Of course, Rok Studios was then acquired by a French media company known as Canal+. The amount that they paid for the company has not been disclosed. Before the acquisition, ROK had made over 500 movies and 25 completely original TV shows. They also had four channels and they now choose to produce content for Canal+ channels as well. Jason Njoku has chosen not to tell everyone the price of the acquisition but when you look at the post he released, you’ll soon see that it is the biggest media transaction deal in history- for Western Africa.
CcHUB Acquires the company iHub
The two companies were launched one year apart. iHub was launched in the year 2010 and the company CcHub launched in 2011. The two hubs did make a lot of impact when it comes to entrepreneurship and even innovation too. This included everything from membership networks to start-ups and more. Both CcHub and iHub are easily some of the biggest hubs on the entire continent. They have a portfolio of both local and international companies and this includes LifeBank and even BudgIT. The company who are based in Lagos have acquired the Nairobi version for an amount that has not been disclosed and even though the latter is actually retaining its name, the two are now going to be merged so that they can then become part of a much bigger and wider network.
This is actually an industry first for the African tech hub and the acquisition joined together two of the most recognised hubs in the area. The mission is to try and connect everyone and to also encourage people to live in a world that is focused on convenience, latest music is also available. This news is very exciting to say the least.
