Uche expressed the belief that this is the only way Buhari, who became the Head of State after the military coup on December 31,1983, that toppled Shagari’s government, can stamp out corruption in the country.

He said this on Saturday while fielding questions from reporters at the maiden Founder’s Day anniversary and inauguration of Very Rev. Sunday Onadipe as Rector of Methodist Theological Institute, Sagamu, Ogun State.

The cleric also urged the President to make his fight against corruption total for Nigerians to have more confidence in the Federal Government’s war against graft.

Uche added that he should also focus on the anti-graft war on current cabinet members to prove he was serious about the fight rather than pursuing a vendetta against the opposition.

He pointed out that only the church could tell Buhari the truth.

The Prelate said, “My advice to the President is that the fight against corruption should be total and shouldn’t be a selective fight. Let him go back to 1979 and start fighting corruption till today. If it is lonely and lopsided, it will seem as a (political) vendetta against the opposition. Nobody will tell him that but the church will tell him that and that is how we see it.

“The corruption fight is selective and against opposition parties and it shouldn’t be so. There are people in his (Buhari) government we know that are more corrupt than those who are being arrested. It should be total and holistic so that we can be sure that he is fighting corruption.”

Uche added, “Some times ago, when (Sunday) Mbang was the Prelate of this church, he said nation building should start from the church; there was a march throughout Nigeria against corruption by the Methodist Church.

“The Methodist Church started the fight against corruption about 15 years ago before even the government initiated it. So, we have been on it and I must tell you that of all those people they are arresting now, I have not seen a single Methodist member.”

The priest, who was honoured with an award of service to the MCN, added, “People like Ken Nnamani is a Methodist, the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo all had Methodist training and you cannot associate them with corruption; so, we have been on it and we are still fighting it till today.”

Earlier, the Rector of the institute, Onadipe, had said there was a need for the church and theological institutes to work together to find a lasting solution to challenges confronting evangelism.

He urged the church to take advantage of modern technology and globalisation to improve on their service delivery.
