President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, says the ninth National Assembly under him would not pass the controversial “Hate Speech” Bill.
This followed the public outcry that greeted the infamous bill, which is being sponsored by the Deputy Senate Chief Whip, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.
Lawan made the disclosure in response to a detailed written protest letter against the hate speech bill and anti-social media bill by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria HURIWA).
In a statement obtained by Igbere TV, Lawan said the legislators will listen to the pulse of the Nigerians who have rejected the bills and will do exactly as they demanded.
With this latest development and open stance of Lawan, and by extension the Senate, the “Hate Speech” Bill is likely not to be passed for further readings.
