Chief Alex Akinyele, a, former Minister of Information, has died after a brief illness, Igbere TV reports.
A statement by one of his sons, Constantine Akinyele, confirmed that he passed away on Thursday night.
A trained public relations specialist, Akinyele was the pioneer spokesperson of the Nigerian Customs Service.
He was 81 years old.
He was secretary-general and later president of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
Akinyele was appointed information minister by former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, later becoming chairman of the National Sports Commission and chairman of the National Reconciliation Commission.
He held the traditional titles of Lisa Jigan and Lobosin of Ondo Kingdom.
