Nigerian Social Worker Stabbed To Death In Canada

A Nigerian social worker, Deborah Onwu, has been stabbed to death in Calgary, Canada.

The 47-year-old was killed last Friday at the hands of an 18-year-old she was caring for at an assisted living facility in the city, south-west of Canada.

Her death has thrown the Nigerian community in Canada into mourning.

President of the Nigerian Canadian Association of Calgary, Seun Ogunsola, said the community is in shock considering that Calgary is a relatively safe place.

Although he did not know the deceased personally, Mr Ogunsola said others described her as a kind, gentle, and dedicated person.

“You don’t get into that kind of work if you don’t have the kindness and generosity to do that job,” he said.

Ogunsola said it appeared she had no immediate family in Calgary.

They are now trying to contact her family abroad and help support them financially and emotionally.

Police, however, have arrested a man, Brandon Newman, in connection with the murder.

He has since been charged with second-degree murder.
