A police officer has reportedly killed a female colleague in Asaba, Delta State capital.Delta police commissioner, Adeyinka Adeleke, confirmed the incident on Monday, saying that investigation had begun.
The incident was said to have occurred on Saturday during the demolition of illegal structures by officials of the Ministry of Environment with some police officers at Bonsaac area of the city.
The market women tried to resist the demolition of their stalls, forcing security operatives to shoot in the air.
Some of the women were said to have angrily charged at a policeman holding a firearm which went off and hit a female officer in the back.
The wounded officer was taken to El-Comfort hospital but could not get medical attention.She was later taken to Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, where she was confirmed dead.
Reports say the unnamed officer whose gun went off is being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Chairman of Bonsaac Landlord Association, Chief Bidi, told newsmen that the incident was a case of accidental discharge.
