The management of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Ondo State has warned the public against falling prey to fraudsters offering fake admission into the institution.
It is alleged that over 50 admission-seekers had been scammed by the fraudsters.
FUTA spokesman, Adegbenro Adebanjo, confirming the development on Monday, said the institution was alerted to the criminal activities of fraudsters by some admission-seekers.
Mr Adebanjo said the institution was highly embarrassed by the criminal activities of the fraudsters, who use social media and the internet to defraud admission-seekers.
“The institution had been receiving reports in the last few days about some admission-seekers falling prey to the activities of the fraudsters claiming to be officials of the university,” he said.
“These impostors through text messages and posts on the social media claim to have the ability and connections to manipulate results of post-UTME tests for any candidate interested in gaining admission into FUTA.
“Also, these fraudsters ask candidates through various social media platforms and other channels to call some phone numbers and pay huge amount of money into private accounts to facilitate admission.
“This is nothing but a scam by these fraudsters. We are cautioning the general public to be wary of these scammers who want to extort money from unsuspecting candidates and their parents and guardians.”
The spokesman said that due to the standard structure of the university system, it was impossible for individuals either internally or externally to manipulate results of the screening exercise and the admission process.
