ASUU blasts APC leader, Tinubu over LAUTECH, threatens indefinite strike

ASUU blasts APC leader, Tinubu over LAUTECH, threatens indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), LAUTECH chapter has berated the governments of Osun and Oyo, which are joint owners of the university for abandoning the institution despite promises earlier made by the duo.

The union accused Governors Abiola Ajimobi and Rauf Aregbesola of running the citadel aground through their lackadaisical approach to the need of the institution.

The Zonal Coordinator of ASUU in Ibadan, Dr. Ade Adejumo, at a press conference in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, said all conditions spelt out in the Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed with the Governing Council of the school on behalf of the two states have been practically reneged upon with impunity.

He added that the only response the union got after resumption from the protracted strike early this year was the 1bn (one billion Naira) released by the Osun State government, which was used to pay three months salaries.

Adejumo however chided the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Bola Tinubu, who holds sway as the Chancellor of the University for keeping mute while the crisis continues to degenerate.

He wondered the essence of Tinubu retaining the position of the Chancellor if he could not intervene and save the institution from collapse.

“Reneging on agreement reached at the point of suspending the protracted strike, coupled with passive response of the two owner governments towards the present challenges facing the University were indeed an height of irresponsibility on the part of the two governors.

“As I speak to you, every thing is in limbo at LAUTECH. We have almost lost accreditation for all our courses because there is no funding to carry out research and equip our laboratories and libraries.

“Staff are not being motivated to passionately impact knowledge as there are huge backlog of salaries and allowances.

“As a result of this anomaly, many lecturers have left while many have retired, and there has not been replacement in the last 10 years thereby rendering the institution highly understaffed.

“We are calling on the two Governors of Oyo and Osun to let the general public know if they are tired and could no longer fund the University,

“They should come out and disclose their plans for LAUTECH. If they want to liquidate the University, they should be bold enough to tell the whole world that they are doing so.

“We are currently on two weeks warning strike. We are by this action calling the attention of stakeholders to the fact that LAUTECH is on the brink of final disintegration.”

The Latest WAEC Ranking Of The 36 States In Nigeria Is As Follow

Long essays, Research Project, Final year project, Final year Thesis, and other academic papers are important elements towards getting an higher institutions certificate of learning in Nigeria.
A research project is a quest into the unknown. It is the act of finding a rational explanation or clarification on facts, events and phenomenon which surrounds human existence.

Research projects takes place in every day of our lives, be it in the formal or informal settings. Literary meaning of the word research refers to an inquiry, which invariably implies that whenever one engages in the process of an inquiry such a person is already making a research, we often embark on research in order to gain clarification on facts and phenomenal which are unknown or not vivid.

Scientific research which is the emphasis of this article differs from mere inquiries in the sense that it deals with the identification of a problem, statement of a problem, formulation of hypothesis, collection, interpreting/analysing of data and formulation or drawing of necessary inference or conclusion(s).

This academic level/requirement from the university is very crucial in moulding a graduate who will be grounded both in theory and practice. It exposes students to research approaches and practical application of theories in solving real life situations.

However these particular aspect of the university requirement tend to pose a lot of constraints and bottleneck to most tertiary institution students partly, as a result of lack of understanding and in depth knowledge of what research really entails and negligence on the part of the students.

This article will do justice to what research stands for, and things to look out for in writing a good research project.

Choosing a Research/ Project Topic

The first stage is choosing project topics, it is worth noting that the success of a good research is partly dependent on the topic.
This is so because if the topic is not balanced or well phrased, it becomes difficult for the young researcher to grasp the meaning or the message his/her topic is trying to pass.

Secondly, if the topic is not in line with the young researcher’s area of interest, for instant project topic imposed on the researcher by his/her supervisor, it could be a constraint because passion and interest is a driving force in every research work.

On the other hand if the topic is not in line with the young researchers supervisor’s interest it also presents a myriad of problem. Hence care should be taken in order not to start off your research on a wrong foot with your supervisor.

  1. Choose a research topic which aligns with your research interest
  2. Choose a research topic which aligns with your supervisor’s interest so as to facilitate a good supervisor-supervisee relationship. Note that if your research interest are not in line with that of your supervisor’s interest, it could take you longer time to finish as the needed attention will not be paid to it.Look for a way to blend into that of your supervisor because your supervisor have a big role to play in the whole process of the research.
  3. Ensure that your topic is researchable: Not every research topic is researchable. To know if your topic is researchable look up the keywords in your topic on the internet, this enables you to ascertain the available literatures and the extent other researchers have done in your area of research or alternatively other offline documents cum documentaries that will be of help in the course of the study. Remember, it is called RE-SEARCH which can consequently (if well planned) lead to new knowledge and INVENTION and not necessarily INNOVATION.
  4. Choose a research topic which would be relevant to the society: identify a problem in your locality and then try fill it. If for instance in your locality there is a high prevalence of unwanted pregnancy, your research topic should be geared towards ascertaining the causes and remedies to the problem in line with your course of study.
  5. Critically look at your topic and plan the end from the beginning. What this entail is that you should know the possible structure of your research work, the methodology to be adopted (if it is one you can handle) and then plan a way of getting it done. For instance, not every research work need survey research design that needs interview, questionnaire et cetera.
  6. Also, you should determine the kind of data your research work need. Most project topics in Economics need secondary data while most project/research topics in Education need primary data. All these can be ascertained from your topic.
  7. Try to know the dependent and the independent variables in your topic as this will help you in developing your research objectives.

Ways of Formulating a Project Topic

1. Identifying a problem within your vicinity. E.g.

  • Effect of economic recession on household food affordability: A study of Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
  • Effect of poor water supply on cholera outbreak in Ebonyi State.
  • Nutritional education: A panacea towards reducing maternal-infant mortality rate in Kotangora, Kaduna state.

2. Creating a topic from trending economic, social or political events of the country. E.g

  • Effect of bad leadership on youth unemployment 1999-2017.
  • Effect of Ponzi scheme on youth’s loyalty and reduced interest in their job.
  • Effect of crypto-currencies on banks liquidity ratio in Nigeria.
  • Emergence of crypto currency and the future of fiat currency.
  • Effect of crypto currency on money laundering in Nigeria.

3. Making up research topics from class activities or course contents. E.g.

  • Effect of teaching method on student’s academic performance: A study of Ebonyi state University, Abakaliki
  • Impact of “sorting” on quality of graduates in institutions of higher learning in Nigeria.

Starting Your Research Writing

Having selected a suitable project topic, don’t be in a hurry to start writing your research project:
Source, download articles, journals and literatures which are relevant and closely related to your study.

Read them very well

Get an already completed research work from your department, you can borrow it from your departmental library and study it.The essence of this is for you to know and understand the format your department is using.
Use the “borrowed” already completed work as a guide, and please do not copy from it, because when you do so, you are no longer conducting a research rather you are just copying words from one book to another which results to plagiarism.

When you have read a lot of literatures then you can start your research work.

Ibarapa Polytechnic shut as SSANIP, NASU protest ‘non-payment of 24 months salaries’ by Oyo govt [PHOTOS]

Reports reaching us from Eruwa, headquarters of Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State have it that workers at the Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa are currently protesting against the alleged non-payment of their salaries and other entitlements running to twenty-four months by the Oyo state government.

The workers, among whom were members of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) and Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), were as at press time locking the gates of the institution.

DAILY POST learnt that they had yesterday informed the students not to come to school today (Wednesday) warning that should they come, no one will attend to them.

A source, who spoke with DAILY POST in a telephone conversation Wednesday morning, informed that the workers after chasing the students out of the institution, declared an indefinite strike over the alleged non-payment of their salaries and other entitlements by the state government.

The source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, added that the workers had waited for many months to be paid, noting that they declared the commencement of the strike after all efforts to get their entitlements met a brick wall.

He said, “Yes, the workers in Ibarapa Polytechnic Eruwa today embarked on strike. It started yesterday, they had informed the students not to come to the school today and when the students came they locked the gates and declared an indefinite strike.

“You can see in the pictures the students are locked outside. The workers are protesting against non-payment of their salaries for several months”.

Chairman, Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Polytechnic Ibadan chapter, Comrade Ibrahim Akande, who confirmed the commencement of the indefinite strike to DAILY POST, however warned that the Polytechnic Ibadan will also join the strike if the situation is not brought under control by the state government.

Akande, in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, added that the workers among whom were SSANIP and NASU members at Ibarapa Polytechnic Eruwa and Oke-Ogun Polytechnic Saki embarked on the strike due to the failure of the state government to offset their salaries and other entitlements running between 8 to 24 months.

Akande, who said it is only The Polytechnic Ibadan that is yet to join the industrial action, said workers at the Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki are already on strike.

He said, “Yes, I can confirm to you that SSANIP and NASU members at the Ibarapa Polytechnic Eruwa have declared an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their salaries and other entitlements running between 8 and 24 months.

“It varies, as at the last time that we met, it was between 8 and 24 months. You can see that Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki is also on strike. They are currently on strike due to non-payment of their salaries and other entitlements. SSANIP and NASU members in Saki are on strike too. Others are about to join.

“So, you can see that strike is looming in all the tertiary institutions in Oyo state. That of Polytechnic Ibadan is also looming. We are still waiting. It is only The Polytechnic Ibadan that is not on strike now. Yes, I can confirm to you.”

91 NYSC members to repeat service year in Delta over gross misconduct

The nemesis of gross misconduct and other related acts has caught up with ninety-one (91) corps members who were supposed to pass out from their service year in Delta state on Thursday same day with other members of their batch.

Out of 2,484 corps members, comprising 1,473 members (male) 1,011 (female), deployed to the state, the 91 corps members were alleged to have been involved in gross misconduct and flouting of the rules of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

Mr Benjamin Omotade, the state coordinator, who confirmed this to DAILY POST in Asaba, said, “the 91 corps members are to repeat their service, they were found defaulting of gross misconduct, lawlessness. This is the punishment they face for another one year.”

He stated that corps members in Delta, throughout their service, were trained to face the labour market independently through different skills acquisition programmes that include: baking, bead making and soap making among others.

Omotade said the corps members had the opportunity of mingling with different people from different cultures, as well as gained entrepreneurial skills, adding that NYSC in the state has trained corps members to be tolerant, good leaders and patriotic citizens.

He charged the corps members to be patriotic and engage in entrepreneurial activities as that is the solution to surviving the hash economic realities in the country, adding that “hardworking corps members shall be rewarded, and will be gainfully employed after their service”.
