BREAKING: ASUU suspends strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a conditional suspension of its nationwide strike.

This comes after a series of meetings between top government officials and members of the union.

ASUU has now directed its members to return to classrooms with immediate effect.

President of the Union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, addressed a news conference at about 9.30 pm Monday night, after another round of meeting with the government delegation, led by the Minister of Labour, Senator Chris Ngige.

Ogunyemi explained that they decided to conditionally suspend the strike action, in view of the timeline of October 2017 for the implementation of the signed agreement.

ASUU had declared a nationwide strike on August 14, over the failure of the federal government to implement the 2009 agreement.

Last week, Ogunyemi stated that the industrial action had not ended, because ASUU was still ironing out some grey areas in the agreement with the FG .

The West African Examinations Council International Office in Lagos said it will soon re-introduce electronic marking for its tests.

Head of the Office, Adelowo Maliki, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Lagos.

“We started this electronic marking in 2014 through to 2015, only for us to suspend it in 2016, due to high costs as regards the high exchange rate.

“But now, we are set to bring it back as we have gotten all necessary approvals from the council’s committee meetings and the council itself.

“This led to our trying to develop our own in-house and by the grace of God, the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates would be marked electronically.

ASUU reacts to new JAMB Cut-off Mark

Following the introduction of a new cut off mark by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board JAMB, the Chairman of ASUU at the University of Ibadan, Dr. Deji Omole has spoken against it stating that the Government is looking to destroy education in Nigeria.

You will recall that JAMB reduced the minimum cut off marks for admissions into universities in Nigeria to 120, polytechnics and colleges of education pegged at 100, while that of innovative enterprising institutes was pegged at 110.

Speaking on why this is a horrible move, Omole said; “Rather than sanctioning the identified universities that admitted over 17,000 students illegally, the JAMB registrar simply regularised illegality and lowered cut-off marks to favour the interests of the friends of government who own private universities and are hell bent on destroying public education.”

Omole stated that JAMB needs to be scrapped altogether as it was no longer useful and is rather a detriment to education in Nigeria; “Where are the students that the JAMB registrar said entered universities illegally? Which universities admitted them? If 30 per cent did not take JAMB and found their way into the university system, is that not corruption and a message that JAMB is not significant anymore? What sanction did those who did the illegal thing receive other than regularisation of illegality.

“We are watching because long before now we have said that JAMB has outlived its usefulness. Let the universities set their unique standards and those who are qualified can come in. Scoring 120 out of 400 marks is 30 per cent. Even in those days, 40 per cent was graded as pass. But now JAMB said with F9 which is scoring 30 per cent you can be admitted.

“They deliberately want to destroy education. Even for polytechnic, 100 marks is 25 per cent. It is sad. And that is where we are in Nigeria. They want to destroy public education at all costs. This is not setting standard for education in Nigeria. It is purely lowering standards and digging grave for the future. This is why ASUU is currently on the struggle to influence the government to do the needful for education in Nigeria.”

Niger Delta varsity joins ASUU strike

The Niger Delta University (NDU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has joined the ongoing nationwide strike declared by the union.

Dr Stanley Oguon, Chairman of the chapter, said on Thursday that the move followed a resolution reached after the local union emergency congress.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that ASUU had on Monday directed all its state chapters to go on an indefinite nationwide industrial action.

Oguon told NAN in Yenagoa that although the university was preparing for its end of semester examinations, the lecturers believe in the genuineness of the ASUU struggle.

Meanwhile, a student of the university, Andy Micheal, has appealed to the Federal Government to dialogue with ASUU, so as not to prolong the strike.

He said that any delay in the negotiation would be counterproductive to students and the nation’s education sector.
