Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal has declared Monday, September 2, 2019 as public holiday to mark the Islamic New Year, Igbere TV reports.
In a statement obtained by Igbere TV signed by Abubakar Shekara, Media Aide to the governor, he said the holiday was to allow Muslim faithful in the state mark the Islamic New Year which began last Saturday.
“Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal enjoins the people to seize the opportunity to pray for peace and the security of Sokoto state and Nigeria as a whole”, the statement partly read.
Governor Tambuwal wished the people of Sokoto, especially Muslim faithful, happy and prosperous Islamic new year.
Meanwhile, Igbere TV earlier reported that the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar II, declared today, Sept. 1 as the first day of Muharram, the first Islamic lunar month.
The Islamic calendar is counted after the Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madina, reports Igbere TV.
