At least two persons have been feared dead after traders and task force agents clashed at the popular Abakpa Main Market, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Igbere TV reports.
Igbere TV gathered that trouble started when the task force agents that are reportedly working for the Ebonyi State governor engaged some of the traders in a fierce duel over a relocation order given to shop owners to relocate to the International market.
According to report, Ebonyi State Government had issued a relocation order for Abakpa market traders to relocate to the newly built International market along the Federal Highway on or before 31st of this month.
But some of the traders alongside their chairman approached the court to get an injunction to stop the forceful relocation.
Igbere TV gathered that trouble started on Wednesday afternoon when the task force agents under the aegis of Akubaraoha Youths Assembly went to the market and started locking up the shops of those who went to court to seek redress.
Speaking with Igbere TV correspondent, one of the shop owners identified as Onyedikachi said at least two persons were allegedly killed while others sustained injuries.
He condemned the action of the state government and pleaded for more time in order for the traders to organise themselves.
“This is not good for the image of the governor. Why should we be treated like animals?”
“All we are asking for is more time in order for us to organise ourselves before moving than to the newly built International Market”.
“At least two persons were killed today and that’s very bad for the image of the governor”, he said.
