The Honourable Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr. Sunday Akin Dare on Friday, resumed duty with a tour around the facilities of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, Igbere TV reports.
Igbere TV reports that the stadium formally known as Abuja National Stadium, was renamed by President Muhammadu Buhari during the June 12 Democracy Day celebration at the Eagles Square, Abuja.
During the tour, the Minister met with Moses Peter, the current World Number 2 Scrabble player, current African Champion and National Champion.
According to Dare, the ongoing National Scrabbles Championship deserves more media coverage and support, as do other sports.
He also met eight-year-old Miss Stephanie Onusiriuka, who exhibited some skills and treated the Minister and his team to a gymnastics routine at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Onusiriuka, Igbere TV reports, is the young Nigerian who recently won gold in Pretoria, South Africa, at the African Clubs Championship.
Speaking with newsmen, the Minister said one of his commitments was to invest in getting the most and urgent facilities needed at the stadium for optimum use in the future, adding that the nation has many assets that hold much potential.
He also revealed that he will in a couple of days, call for a meeting of critical stakeholders in Sports and Youth development, adding that President Buhari was committed to lifting millions of youth out of unemployment.
“Today, I inspected the M.K.O. Abiola Stadium facilities. I saw assets that hold so much potentials. We shall invest in getting the most urgent and important facilities to optimum use in the nearest future”, he said.
“As a practical demonstration to this cause, I will in a couple of days convene a meeting of critical stakeholders in the area of youth development.
“The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari re-dedicates itself to deepening youth development and providing and enabling environment for their growth. Mr. President is committed to lifting millions of our youth out of unemployment”, the Minister added.
Mr. Dare praise the commitment and patriotism of the staff of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, saying, “they have done their best under incredible circumstances.”
“As a team we will sharpen the mandate of the Ministry”, he added.
