Checks in some of the major markets in the state revealed that prices of foodstuffs have reduced by 50% , Daily Trust reports.

According to Malam Adamu Kafin Maigari, a grain seller at Muda Lawal Market, Bauchi, a bag of maize which few months ago was going for N18,000 now sells for N9,000 while local rice that used to cost N35,000 is now being sold at N20,000.

He also said that a bag of beans is now sold at N16,000 from its previous price of N25,000, while a bag of millet and white rice popularly called Shinkafar Tuwo, now cost N9,000 and N20,000 respectively from their previous prices of N15,000 and N37,000.

Kafin Maigari attributed the crash in prices to the bumper harvest recorded in the country following the massive engagement in farming by many people.

However the grain seller expressed concern with the high cost of foreign rice which is still sold at N18,500 per bag.

He called on the federal government to address the shortage of foreign currencies particularly the dollar, to enable importers conduct their legal businesses without hitches.

Meanwhile, the prices of food items have crashed in Hadejia, Jigawa state. PM News reports that the crash in food price is as a result of ‘a significant increase in the supply of agricultural produce to the market’.

According to investigations by NAN at Hadejia market, food prices were down by about 30 percent. Now, a bag of millet goes for N14, 000 as against N18, 000 while a bag of paddy rice went for N8, 500 as against its previous price of N11, 000.
