BREAKING: Heavy Shooting As Police, Shiites Clash In Abuja (Photos)

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), better known as Shiites, have stormed the National Assembly, in Abuja, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that members of the group are protesting the continued detention of their leader, El-Zazaky, by the Nigerian government.

This comes barely 24 hours after the group told the police to expect more protest if the government continues to hold their leader behind bars.

The notice came on the heels of warning issued to members of the group by the police and statement credited to Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu, that only the court can determine their case.

Our National Assembly correspondent reports that the protesters numbering in their numbers have managed to gain access to the first gate of the National Assembly.

Sporadic shootings have also greeted the air as passersby scamper for safety.

As at the time of filing this report, policemen and other security agents are trying to stop the protesting Shiite members from gaining entrance to the second gate.

Confirming the report, the police in a Public Service Announcement via their official Twitter handle, advised members of the public to remain calm.

They also advised the people to avoid areas within the National Assembly complex as they try to contain the situation.

“There is a violent protest currently ongoing by members of the El-Zakzakky Group in some parts of the FCT – particularly the Central Business District and the Three Arms Zone.

“The Police are taking adequate measures to bring the situation under control.

“Citizens are advised to remain calm and avoid the affected areas in the interim. The Police will keep the public abreast with further development” the police wrote.
