The National Judicial Council (NJC) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Igbere TV reports.
Igbere TV reports that the NJC, at an emergency meeting earlier today, also recommended to Buhari names of judges to be appointed as Chief Judges and Grand Kadis for eight states – Lagos, Anambra, Ebonyi, Niger, Taraba, Kano, and Jigawa states.
The NJC commended Buhari for his unequivocal position on the financial autonomy for the state’s Judiciary and called on the various state executives to, as a matter of urgency, commence its immediate implementation.
Igbere TV reports that on Jan. 25, Buhari suspended the then CJN, Walter Onnoghen, pending the completion of his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
The President consequently swore in Justice Mohammed as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Mohammed who hails from Bauchi state is the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court.
