SSS 2 Student killed Self For Being Abandoned By Boyfriend In Benue

A Senior Secondary School (SSS II) female student of Dyege Memorial College, Akpehe in Makurdi, Benue State Capital, Jessica Beer, early this week committed suicide after she lost her boyfriend to another girl.

It was  learnt that the 19 year old deceased was said to have taken her life when her boyfriend named Labi, a pork seller at Wurukum market in Makurdi metropolis, whom she was pregnant for left her for another girl who also got pregnant for him.

When our correspondent visited the school yesterday many of her classmates were in tears while teachers were in groups with stony face and discussed in hush tunes.

A friend of the victim who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity said Beer might have killed herself because of the action of her boyfriend whom she claimed to have loved so much.

The anonymous friend said Beer had accused the boyfriend of impregnating another girl and felt that such act could deny her future plan after finishing her school, adding that at the time she went to her friend’s residence, she discovered that the victim had “vomited blood and fell from the bed to the floor.”

According to her, “my friend had brought a sharp knife the previous night to my house that I should see her off to Labi’s residence, threatening that she was going to deal with him, but I advised her not to do such thing by going to take the life of her boyfriend or herself.”

It was gathered that the victim was however rushed to a private hospital at Akpehe, where doctors confirmed that she was brought in dead.

A nurse at the hospital who identified herself as Mrs Atser Terkimbi told newsmen that when the victim was brought into the hospital, she was foaming in the month as a result of the substance she might have taken.

The Proprietress of the School, Mrs Mercy Dyege, told our correspondent that she was so shocked when the news of the suicide broke to her.

While expressing sadness over the death of her student, Mrs Dyege described the action as barbaric, uncalled for and ungodly, saying that she always advised the students to focus on their studies and devote their lives to God rather than engaging in issues of boy and girl friend relationships.

Mrs Dyege said, “I always advise the teachers to pray with the students and teach them the word of God especially the female students. I also told the students especially the girls that it is better they focus on their studies; it is men that will look for them when they come out with flying colour,” adding, “this kind of incident has never occurred  in my school in the past and I stand to condemned this behaviour in strong term.”

When contacted, the Benue State command Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), ASP Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident, saying investigation had commenced and advised other students to desist from such act.

The PPRO said Beer’s boyfriend had reported to the police that her girlfriend drank a poisonous substance, but before the police could get to the hospital, the family of the deceased had taken her corpse away.
