Senator Danjuma Goje’s N6.6 billion corruption case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been taken over by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Igbere TV has learnt.
This comes less than 24 hours after the lawmaker withdrew from the Senate Presidency race.
Igbere TV had reported that, Goje, on Thursday, said he was backing out of the race to support Senator Ahmed Lawan for the Senate Presidency position.
Goje, a previous key contender for the position, announced his withdrawal from the race after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and Senator Ahmed Lawan, the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s choice for the position on Thursday, June 6.
The Goje’s N6.6 billion corruption case, until now, was being treated by the EFCC at a Federal High Court in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
According to reports, the office of the AGF took over the case from the EFCC so that justice can be served.
It should be recalled that Goje, who is representing Gombe Central at the Senate with former Executive Chairman of Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Aliyu Ubandoma, and many others were charged for diverting money meant for the state government.
During Friday’s sitting on June 7, the representative of the AGF said they assumed the case for the interest of justice.
Paul Erokoro, Counsel to Goje, did not object to the new development by the Attorney General.
“No objection pursuant to Section 174 Sub-1(v) only hope that will expedite action, because 19 out of 21 charges had gone,” he said.
The lawyer to the EFCC, Wahab Shitu, also did not object the application, saying that he has been briefed by the anti-agency.
“Absolutely no objection my lord for Attorney General to take over at this stage. EFCC has already briefed us on the development,” he said.
The presiding judge of the case, Justice Babatunde Quadri, adjourned to Friday, June 21 for the defendants to open their case on the charges.
