Policemen in Lagos have arrested six suspects in possession of poisonous cow skin, popularly called ‘ponmo’.
Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Bala Elkana, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
He said the suspects on Sunday, May 5 at about 5am following a police tip-off.
He gave the names of the suspects as Adelowo Yinka (50years), Olawumi Onabanjo (40years), Omowumi Wasiu (43years), Adeshokan Taiwo (43years), Iyabo Oluwa (38years) and Taye Kazeem (40years).
He said the huge pillage and pyramid of poisonous ponmo and the chemicals used in the preservation of the cow skins were recovered in a warehouse at No. 9, College Road, Igando.
One TATA Truck with registration number AKD-375-XB which was used in conveying the goods, according to him, was also impounded.
He said officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health were contacted and after due examination, the cow skins were confirmed to be poisonous and not fit for human consumption.
The Police Spokesman assured Lagosians that the Command will continue to protect life and property of the people, adding, “nvestigation is ongoing to ascertain the source and destinations of those poisonous food items, and suspects will be charged to court.’’
