The Students’ Union President of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Comrade Abiodun Laurel has been suspended from office, Igbere TV reports.
Igbere TV gathered that Laurel was suspended for endorsing and campaigning for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde. The Vice President, Badiru Amidat is to act as President.
The act, Igbere TV learnt, is against the students’ union constitution and a breach of the university’s code of conduct.
LAUTECH is a state institution located in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and the school is jointly owned by the Oyo and Osun States government. Both the Oyo and Osun are APC-controlled states.
Also suspended, findings by Igbere TV revealed, were the Union’s Secretary General and Public Relations Officer, Comrades Juwon and Adeyemi Emmanuel respectively.
In a statement signed by the Senate Arm of the Students’ Union and obtained by Igbere TV, the trio were asked to handover every students union properties in their possession to the “appropriate quarters.”
Full Statement,
“In retrospect of the House sitting held today by Distinguished Senators representing their constituencies from different departments, they resolved to suspend some executives of the Union on the charge that:-
“1) In a situation as such as in this political era, LAUTECH is not a private enterprise that can endorse any political candidate or party contesting in the state or national politics but disheartening that the SUG president in person of Laurel endorsed the gubernatorial Candidate of PDP when he is supposed to stay neutral being a political office holder, image and number one student of the school. What if the aspirant(s) or the political party(ies) you endorsed doesn’t emerge, that means you have put the future of 35,000 students of LAUTECH as a citadel to another crisis as the opposition party you are endorsing may not attend to the school case if we are having any problem. This is detrimental to our academics and has put the Management and Campus in difficult situation.
“2) The School management warned against political rally and its involvement on campus. The SUG President as the number one student has violated the rules and regulations from the management because no aspirant can enter the school and be rallying around without its consent.
“3) Reports had it that the SUG President endorsed the gubernatorial candidate of AD earlier today and later endorsed the gubernatorial candidate of PDP. What if the earlier endorsed candidate mobilized thugs to the school to disrupt the rally of the other candidate that the SUG President was taking around the campus halls and as we all know, riots and crisis cannot be found wanting in political rallies in the history of Nigeria politics. What if riot ensued and students are victims of death or properties damaged? What explanation has got the Union President?.
“4) The SUG President did not even inform the management of the development putting the governing council and management to answer questions from different quarters like they are the one endorsing candidate of one political party against another; instigating the Student Union to achieve that.
“5) The slogan of the school is “Excellent, Integrity and Service.” It is disheartening that the number one student in the person of Abiodun Oluwaseun Laurel will hide under the canopy of the Union and the office he holds to soil LAUTECH’s integrity for PERSONAL INTERESTS.
“In lieu of this, the LAUTECH SUG President (Laurel) has been suspended for 200 working days.
“The General Secretary in the person of Comrade Juwon had been suspended Indefinitely.
“The SUG PRO (Parrot) has been suspended for 150 working days for sending a notification to the students to converge and support a particular candidate which is a breach of law as a office holder should stay neutral in such situation.
“Hence, the Vice President of the Union BADIRU TIMILEYIN AMIDAT (Mhz Fourier) should discharge duties as the Number one Student.
“AYOTOMIWA RASHEED (King kyle) will replace Comrade Juwon and act as the Union General Secretary.
“And whosoever that will occupy the office of the PRO will be communicated to the student populace later.
“The affected and suspended Executives are therefore with immediate effect ordered to release and submit all Students Union properties under their care to the appropriate Quarters.”
