Former Governor of Abia State and candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia North Senatorial election, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, on Thursday, expressed confidence that the party would win Abia State in the February 16 and March 2 2019 general elections, Igbere TV reports.
Kalu, a chieftain of the APC in Abia state, also declared that the party has the capacity to dislodge the PDP because the incumbent Governor of the State, Okezie Ikpeazu has lost touch with the people of Abia.
He spoke during a live interactive program, “Politics Today”, when he appeared as a special guest on Flo-FM, Umuahia, a broadcast closely monitored by Igbere TV.
According to Kalu, “The APC will win massively in Abia State. You can see for yourself, the mood of the people is for change. Past state governments, both the first and the incumbent, told a lot of lies about me and people are seeing the truth and identifying with what is right, and they are rallying around, because they know those who love them and those who don’t.
“Specifically in Abia North, we are going to win in that zone. We have always won elections there. We won elections there in 2015 with large margin, but the rigging machines rewrote the results. You cannot say election was inconclusive only for you to announce winner at 2.am midnight. But we thank God because we are not people of no hope. We are very committed and steadfast in our attitude towards democracy.
“We are not going to allow anybody to rig us out (this time). We are very hopeful that the process will be free, fair and credible. We have a President who doesn’t believe in ‘do or die’ politics, he has made it clear several times that the executive will not interfere in the processes. He’s not like the former President of Nigeria who goes to one corner and tell INEC to write the result which he did on so many occasions. He even got to the point of asking Waba to rewrite the electoral acts so he could go for a third term. Today, we have a man who is very interested in due process and modern day democracy.”
Speaking on why he’s in the race, the former governor said he’s better experienced to bring the much needed change in Abia North than the rest contenders.
“I have the knowledge and wealth of experience as a former governor and member of the House of Representatives for many years. The opposition knows I’m a very strong voice, that’s why they are already jittery. I’m not going there to represent just Ndigbo, I’m going to represent the entire Nigerians because I’ll be known as Senator of the Federal Republic and not Senator of Ndigbo. I’m going to legislate policies that would address Agriculture, Education, Commerce and Infrastructures. I’m going to add values to the lives of the youths. I know I’m not going for an executive position, but by God’s Grace, we are going to initiate some bills that would reform Agriculture and create employment for them.
“We are going to be investing our energy in creating policies that would bring about a new revolution in Agriculture and revolutionarise palm plantation. I’ve done it before as a governor and got nicknamed “action governor”, and I’ll do it again this time as a Senator. Hopefully, after my first tenure, the people of Nigeria will call me action Senator. I am not going to be an all-fighting Senator, I am going to be a listening and problem solving Senator,” he said.
