Senator Dino Melaye who represents Kogi West in the National Assembly has finally regain his freedom after spending over two weeks in police custody having perfected his bail conditions, Igberetvnews reports.
Igberetvnews learnt from a family source that “the senator is home and now resting”.
The police had snubbed the order of a Federal Capital Territory High Court granting Melaye bail on Monday , but the FCT Police Command apparently yielded to pressure and released the Kogi West lawmaker 24 hours later.
The lawmaker β s ordeal started in December last year after he refused to surrender to the police operatives who were at his house to arrest him in connection with the shooting of one Sgt . Danjuma Aliu in Kogi State by suspected thugs .
After he had holed up in his Abuja mansion for about a week, Melaye subsequently gave himself up. He was taken into custody and later rushed to the hospital after he reportedly slumped.
Melaye was detained at the police clinic in Garki , Abuja, where he spent two weeks until his release.
He is expected to face new charges which had been filed before an FCT High Court by the police.
Amongst the fresh charges filed against Sen. Melaye, he is being accused of illegal obstruction of lawful arrest, resisting arrest and accusing the immediate past Inspector – General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, of planning to inject him with poison.
