UMUAHIA — A leader of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia State, Honourable Afamefula Udonsi Nkata has defected with over 2,000 supporters to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Igbere TV reports.
Nkata, a former House of Assembly aspirant in Ohafia South local government area of the state, was received into the APC by former governor and APC Abia North senatorial candidate, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu.
Speaking with Igbere TV on their reasons for defecting, Hon. Nkata said the people (of the state) are in search for good and progressive governance.
The APGA stalwart explained that his defection with mammoth supporters of the party to APC will bring about the long awaiting desired change to the All Progressives Congress in the state.
He was optimistic that the looming change in Abia in the forthcoming elections, would bring a final end to what he described as the ongoing maladministration in the state.
They vowed to work at cross purpose with their kinsmen who are key political stakeholders of APGA both in the state and the local government to deliver APC in their wards in the 2019 general elections.
He disclosed that APC was endeared to their hearts by the developmental strides of President Muhammadu Buhari, particularly in the area of massive road construction in the council area.
According to him, “For us, it’s about change. We have had maladministration for the past twelve years in this state, and we cannot continue anymore. We say yes to Uche Ogah as governor, and OUK as Senator.
“Ohafia is a great local government area that cannot afford to play the second fiddle by belonging to the wrong place (APGA).
“Secondly, Ohafia is for the progressives. We are wonderful people. We cannot afford to belong to ‘local progressives’ called APGA when others are in the real progressives (APC).
“The present APC government is busy constructing roads and other social amenities in rural communities where we belong.
“Throughout our trying moments of insecurity and other problems confronting the state, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu is the only person bold enough to speak in defence of the masses.
“All other politicians and stakeholders of the state had abandoned us and only resurfaced now because they need our votes to win the election.”
Responding, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, who received the defectors on behalf of the APC, expressed his gratitude to the people for believing in him, saying if elected Senator, he would develop the senatorial zone, promote unity and generate employment.
