The Presidency may intervene in the case involving the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, Igbere TV can authoritatively report.
The Chief Justice is billed to appear before the Code Of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for trial on Monday, over allegations bothering on non-declaration of assets.
A source within the Presidency, who spoke to Igbere TV on the condition of anonymity, said “bearing any last minute changes, tomorrow’s arraignment may be aborted.”
He added that “The Federal Government is weighing its options whether to allow the trial go on or not, due to the unnecessary criticisms it has raised in some quarters.”
The source also disclosed that the move by the Federal Government to abort the trial may not be unconnected to the legal and politial implications “especially as the 2019 elections is just a few days away.”
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and National Judicial Council (NJC) have condemned the proposed trial of the Chief Justice.
Igbere TV reports that the CJN particularly said “Justice Onnoghen will not appear before any tribunal until the laid down procedures (for prosecuting CJNs) has been strictly followed.”
Similarly, the South South Governors Forum has condemned the order issued the CJN to vacate his office, allegedly by the Federal Government.
The governors in a communique released at the end of today’s emergency meeting, advised President Muhammadu Buhari to “quickly intervene, and save Nigeria’s dying democracy.”
