BREAKING!!! "Seats of Sacked Lawmakers Remain Vacant", A'Ibom Assembly Dispels Rumour

The Chief Whip & Chairman, House Committee on Youth, Sports and Security, Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Ekpenyong Bassey has released the agreement reached by the leadership of lawyers and some security officials in a meeting held yesterday.

Hon.Bassey said it was pertinent for him to clear the air because of mischief makers and rumor mongers who are bent of misleading the public and restated that the seats of the five sacked lawmakers in the state  remain vacant.

According to a statement forwarded to Igbere TV by Hon. Bassey, there was no such resolution as being mischievously circulated.

He further said that the decision as to who leads the 6th Assembly is exclusively that of the members of the House of Assembly to make. The Speaker’s position or any other business of the House for that matter is not determined at the police station or anywhere outside the floor of the House as provided for in the Constitution and the standing orders of the House.

The statement reads in full,

“I have seen a story being circulated purportedly as the resolution of a meeting between the leadership of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, lawyers, and some security officials in the state  yesterday. For the sake of members of the public who have been following the recent attacks on the  operations of the State legislature by certain disruptive elements, it is important to put the facts straight concerning the meeting of yesterday, that:”

“1. There was no such resolution as being mischievously circulated. The decision as to who leads the 6th Assembly is exclusively that of the members of the House of Assembly to make. The Speaker’s position or any other business of the House for that matter is not determined at the police station or anywhere outside the floor of the House as provided for in the Constitution and the standing orders of the House.”

“2. The leadership of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly clearly stated its position to await the outcome of the matters currently pending in courts and to stand by the earlier resolutions of the House. We made it clear to the Commissioner of Police that as a law abiding House, we will await the decisions of the court on the matters instituted by the ex-lawmakers and which matters are currently pending. By implication therefore, the former members whose seats were declared vacant are by law not members of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly. Already, there are multiple undetermined cases in the courts against the House of Assembly as instituted by the affected former members.”

“3. I must restate the fact that at no point in that meeting was it agreed that the Speaker or the House rescinds on the resolutions taken. If  there was any such resolutions as peddled by the mischief makers, there would certainly have been a communique to that effect. I challenge anyone to produce any communique to the public to substantiate the purported resolution.”

“We hope that mischief makers would desist forthwith from their pernicious propaganda and embrace decorum as all 21 honourable Members of the House cannot be bullied into taking the path of illegality just to please people who have made themselves gods in the affairs of Akwa Ibom state.”

More details soon.
