The deputy Governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has resigned.
Ahmed is the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and he is expected to contest against his former boss, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who may fly the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the gubernatorial poll in 2019 elections.
A source close to Tambuwal reliably informed IGBERE TV that the deputy governor was not forced to resign, as alleged in some quarters.
According to the source, “he resigned voluntarily and we will not hesitate to accept his resignation.”
IGBERE TV gathered that Ahmed submitted a copy of his resignation letter to the state House of Assembly but it was not read at the floor of the House during Tuesday’s sitting.
A member of the House who sought for anonymity confirmed the receipt of the letter.
“It is good that he resigned honourably because he would save himself from unforeseen humiliation and also save his relationship with the governor,” he said.
He confirmed that the deputy governor didn’t resign because he was having problem with his boss as a result of their political differences, reiterating that he was not forced to resign.
Both the spokesmen of Governor Tambuwal and that of the Deputy Governor could not be reached for comment as at the time of filling this report.
Meanwhile, Governor Tambuwal’s name is missing as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releases the names of aspirants for the 2019 elections in Sokoto state.
The Sokoto state governor who defected from the ruling APC to the PDP contested and lost the presidential primary of the PDP.
IGBERE TV reported that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar beat him to the ticket. The list was displayed at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the state.
The list displays Manir Dan’iya as the governorship candidate of the PDP in the state.
Manir Dan’iya was the immediate past commissioner for local government and community development in Sokoto state.
