A civil right activist Comrade Godswill Uchechi Enwere has emphasised that the immediate restructure of the country will pave way for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
He stated this in an exclusive interview with Abia Breaking News. The youth welfare campaigner who is also the national coordinator Youth Welfare & Civil Rights Initiative this will address myriads of security challenges facing the nation.
“There is urgent need for true federalism in the country as the only solution for a better, secure and progressive Nigeria. True federalism will ensure the creation of state and city police like it is practised in developed countries which will help to tackle the security challenges faced by the country frontally as the protection of lives and property would be a primary responsibility of state governments that are closer to the people.
“When there is security, there will be development. Restructuring will solve Nigeria’s problems 60% instantly and every other thing will fall into place with time. It will address the Biafra agitation, Niger Delta militancy, Boko Haram, OPC, Herdsmen/Farmers crisis and many others. It will bring back the articulated progressive developments witnessed in Nigerian before 1966. Nigeria will change within 5 years of implementation. Abuja cannot solve the problem of every body. People must be free to develop according to their needs with their available natural and human resources.
“Since it is now a consensus in the South that restructuring is the best way to go, politicians contesting for the 2019 elections, especially from the Southern part of the country should focus their drive on true federalism. When they get to the National Assembly, they should make sure the constitution is amended to achieve and accommodate true federalism so that everybody would be at peace because that is the only thing that will make Nigeria achieve meaningful progress.
He also insisted that the advantages of State police far outweighs its demerits. “Those people who are afraid that governors would use state police against the opposition should weigh the merits and demerits of its creation. Laws should be put in place to checkmate such moves. Laws should be enacted that guarantees that the Inspector General of the state police would not be appointed by governors but by the state houses of assembly or any other way.
“By that, you curtail the powers of the governor over the state police.You have to also think about the benefits of state police on the masses, because the governor is just one person but the people are the real ones as far as governance is concerned. I believe with state police, the incessant killings of innocent people in the Middle Belt would have been controled” he opines.
Comrade Enwere noted that since the police is a federal establishment, it was difficult to clamp down on skirmishes of security threats as fast as possible before they escalate into major issues that claim lives and property as a result of the bureaucracy that only allows orders to come from the centre.
He advised the electorate not to vote for any aspirant from the South East extraction who does not have restructuring as priority in his to-do-list when he emerges winner.
According to him, “since it has become consensus that restructuring is the way to go, I am calling on Nigerians to consider voting those politicians that are talking about restructuring and youths empowerment, both for presidential, governorship, national and state assemblies. Whoever is contesting that is pushing for restructuring and youths empowerment should be the one that the people should consider”.
He also advised Nigerian youths to endeavour to read history of Nigeria from precolonial, colonial, Independence and post independent era including the civil war in order to equip themselves with vital knowledge on why we are where we are and how best to move forward. He frowned at the level of ignorance and sycophancy amongst the youth in the country which he said has made them willing tools in the hands of selfish individuals.
