Lionel Messi failed to get off the mark at the 2018 World Cup, missing a penalty as Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Iceland, in the first Group D game of the tournament.
The Argentines came into the tournament, as favourites to finish top of the group, that also has Nigeria and Croatia.
They began on a good note, with Sergio Aguero lashing in the opener.
However, Iceland were level within four minutes. Alfred Finnbogason tucked the equalizer away, after confusion in the South Americans’ defence.
Messi had the chance to put his side 2-1 in the match, but his spot kick was saved brilliantly by Hannes Thor Halldorsson.
Argentina face Croatia next, while Iceland play Nigeria.
