In her address during the inauguration of the South East Legislative and Governance Reform Committee, chairman of the South East Speakers Conference and Anambra Speaker Rita Maduagwu said the forum will position the Assemblies to promote, share and adapt effective legislative/governance reforms and learning across the region.

“Our interest is to coordinate the implementation of legislative reforms that will improve service as well as identify best legislative practices and share among the South East legislatures for adoption.”

She noted that the forum which is a baby of the DFID is also expected to facilitate the development of legislative frameworks, mechanism and systems that will enhance the functionality of the Houses of Assembly in the region. “If these are achieved, the Assemblies will find it easier to domesticate and adapt federal enactments that will bring about improved service delivery, better standard of living, superlative oversight and representative functions.”

Maduagwu further noted that the South East Legislative and Governance Reform Committee will liaise with South East Governors Forum to reach Citizens, groups, institutions and professional bodies for improved delivery of public goods and services.

“Capacity building for members of the Legislature and staff would not be overlooked. This platform will adopt a passionate and proactive approach towards identifying opportunities to promote the training of legislators and staff.”
