Fulani herdsmen have allegedly besieged farmlands in the Igbo-Etche Local Government Area of Rivers state, destroying
crops and pointing gun and arrows, threatening anyone who dares to sound the alarm, Vanguard reports.
In reaction to this, angry women of the community led by Nkechinyere Nwosu, wife of the paramount ruler, Ekwu I of Umuekwune- Ohoro, Igbo-Etche kingdom, Eze Innocent Nwosu marched to the palace of the monarch, to urge him to take action.
The women also appealed to the state governor Nyesom Wike to come to their rescue as they were scared that the assault could escalate into raping females and butchering villagers. Narrating the women’s message to her husband, Nkechinyere urged the monarch to inform the governor to take immediate action to put an end to the deadly activities of the herdsmen.
According to the monarch’s wife, there was hunger in the land due to the destructive actions of the herdsmen. She stated: “We want His Excellency, the governor of Rivers State to come and help us over these herdsmen and their cattle; they are destroying our farmlands.
“They come with guns and arrows; when we talk, they will point guns and arrows at us and that is why we do not complain because we do not want to die.”
In response, the monarch Eze Innocent Nwosu stated: “We are peace loving people and we do not want to engage anyone in war; that is why we are calling on the governor to give urgent attention to the cry of Igbo-Etche people about the herdsmen.
“If herdsmen destroy our crops, what do they expect us to feed on?” Eze Nwosu urged governor Wike to pay urgent attention to the matter.
