The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has called on Acting-President, Yemi Osinbajo to, as a matter of urgency, put in place measures that will reduce hunger and poverty in the country; warning that frustration and anger against the government were building up within the hearts of most Nigerians.
This position was contained in a communiqué signed by Primate of the church, Most Revd. Nicholas Okoh and made available to the media at the conclusion of a meeting of the Standing Committee of the church, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Complex, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Okoh called on the government to formulate lasting policies that would create employment and improve the general welfare of the people.
He also urged government to take bold steps to address the economy of the country and advocated the need to review the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
The clergyman stated: “The effect of the present economic recession in the country is taking a very heavy toll on the citizenry.
“This is, no doubt, largely due to long years of failure to plan strategically. The Standing Committee, accordingly, urges that bold steps be taken to reduce hunger and poverty in the land to reduce anger and frustration which are gradually building up. The need to guide against the consequence of civil unrest at this stage of our national development is further emphasized.”
He also called on Nigerians to develop positive disposition towards ailing President, Muhammadu Buhari and to pray for his quick recovery and safe return to the country.
“While praying for the quick recovery of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, and his safe return to the country soonest, the Standing Committee urges Nigerians to imbibe positive disposition towards our national leaders, especially in times of health challenges as they are also human,” he added
