Nigerian newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

1. President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday met with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, at the Abuja House in London. The meeting centred on matters of mutual interests between the Executive and the Legislature. The two leaders also used the opportunity to personally pray for the President and wish him quick return to Nigeria.

2. The Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday visited the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Finance to demand the release of the state’s N1.1bn budget support facility for the month of January. Fayose who could not meet the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun on seat told journalists that Ekiti was the only State that had not received its allocation for the month of January.

3. The Managing Director of Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Mr Ahmed Kuru, has explained that AMCON took over the Arik Airline because it was owing it N146 billion. He disclosed this at a meeting with the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions on Wednesday in Abuja.

4. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has denied reports that its Group Managing Director (GMD) Dr. Maikanti Kacalla Baru, was flown out of Nigeria for surgery. But reacting, NNPC Group General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndu Ughamadu said the reports were false. He said the GMD was only on two weeks leave and will be back after the two weeks.

5. President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed the visit paid on him by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and the Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan on Wednesday night. Tweeting from his official handle@MBuhari along with images, the President wrote: “Pleased to receive Senate President @bukolasaraki, Speaker@YakubDogara and Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan, tonight.

6. Relatively, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has also confirmed he visited President Muhammadu Buhari in London, alongside other leaders of the National Assembly. In a statement he personally signed, he described the president as healthy, withy and himself.

7. The Federal Government has approved N126 billion for the reconstruction of 12 roads across the country. The approval was formally made by the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday.

8. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has stated that crude oil production has risen to two million barrels per day. With this, Nigeria now produces additional 200,000 barrels per day, up from the 1.8 million recorded in recent times.

Kachikwu disclosed this when he met with the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) to defend the 2017 budget estimates of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

9. Kaduna state government has said it has committed N2 billion to the preparation for the diversion of flights to Kaduna International Airport following the proposed closure of Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport. The amount according to governor El-Rufai was being spent on the building of the new road linking Kaduna Airport with the light rail train station in Rigasa, resurfacing of the Nnamdi Azikwe Express Way and installation of solar powered streetlights among others.

10. Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr is expressed confidence that the national team will end the first phase of African World Cup qualifiers with maximum points from three matches. He assured of a victory over Cameroon in August despite that they are now champions of Africa.
