A murderous Brooklyn mom can’t remember any of the grim details from the night she allegedly beat her 4-year-old son to death, reports Daily News.
The woman identified as Zarah Coombs wept during jailhouse interview Saturday, claimed she blacked out — and didn’t learn of her boy Zamair’s death until hours later from police.
“My life is over,” said Coombs before breaking down in sobs. “Nothing will ever be the same. My baby’s gone and it’s my fault … I wish I could hold him, and hug him, and tell him that I love him.”
The 26-year-old woman had told the police she killed Zamair by beating the helpless child with a broomstick in their basement apartment Wednesday night, sources said. She was said to have become angry when Zamair accidentally dropped an egg on the floor of their home, sources said. But Coombs said she only remembers that the boy was trying to help her with the cooking.
Now the lost little boy’s face dominates her tortured thoughts.
“Every time I close my eyes, I see his face, hear his voice,” said Coombs. “I just talk to him all night.”
Her two younger kids, ages 1 and 1 month, were crying as the TV blared and Zamair tried to get her attention, recalled Coombs.
“I just heard noise,” she said. “Noise from my own head. TV. Crying.”
When she snapped out of her funk, Coombs said she saw Zamair lying on the floor.
“He was humming,” she recalled. “He looked at me, but didn’t say anything. I said ‘OK, baby.’ I just thought he needed to be held, loved, to be sang to, given a warm bath, a good meal.”
The mom then placed the little boy inside a plastic storage tub that doubled as their bathtub. Coombs says she fell asleep while feeding her infant and woke up when her boyfriend came home.
By then it was too late for Zamair.
Boyfriend Jamari Richardson woke her up to say the little boy had slipped under the water in the bin.
“And I said, ‘What do you mean, under? There’s barely any water. There’s nothing to go under,’”
recounted Coombs.
Richardson performed CPR on the dying child, who was revived another three times at the hospital before passing away.
The helpless victim had cuts, bruises and abrasions on his neck and body, according to police. The medical examiner, in ruling the case a homicide, found the cause of death was multiple blunt-impact injuries.
Police sources indicated that Coombs claimed she was stressed out by caring for the two younger siblings. She had four kids, and three of them lived with her and Richardson.
Neighbors said Coombs showed no emotion as her son’s battered body was taken out of their Brownsville apartment building.
The mom was home alone with the three kids because her live-in boyfriend was out buying marijuana, sources said. Coombs was placed on suicide watch after her Thursday arrest on murder charges. She only realized that her son was dead while in police custody, she says.
“I lost it,” she said. “That was a panic attack, not an anxiety attack. If I could have banged my head any harder and banged it open, I would have done it. My heart was ripped out. My blood ran cold.”
Coombs worked at a Bushwick day center owned by her family, with past customers there recalling her fondly.
