Drug Allegations: Senator Buruji Kashamu Might Be Arrested by NDLEA Again

The Nigerian Drug law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday said it would take necessary legal action to ensure that Senator Buruji Kashamu’s complaint that the United States agents’ attempt to arrest him in collaboration with the NDLEA was in line with Nigeria and the U.S. bilateral treaty.

The NDLEA was responding to Kashamu’s veiled reference that U.S. attempt to arrest him constituted “an attempted abduction.”

Spokesperson for the agency, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, in a two paragraph statement added:

“NDLEA will take necessary legal action to ensure that he clears himself of any drug allegation in the US in line with our bilateral treaty.

“No individual is above the law and the agency will act within the confines of the rule of law in the enforcement of its mandate.

We do not announce arrests but the agency will do the needful.”

It would be recalled that a U.S. Appeal Court had on Monday dismissed Kashamu’s complaint that U.S. agents’ attempt to arrest him in collaboration with the NDLEA would constitute “an attempted abduction.”

A report in Washington Post on Thursday said the ruling was given by the U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Kashamu, in April 2015, filed a suit asking a district court to prevent his “abduction abroad by U.S. authorities.”
