President Muhammadu Buhari’s media aide has corroborated the assertion of the Chairman of Kala Balge Local Government Area of Borno State, Babagana Malarima, has said 236 were killed in the Air Force’s accidental bombing of an internally displaced people ’s camp in the state’s northern town of Rann.
Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu made the staggering revelation while speaking on a popular TV programme – Sunrise Daily on Channels TV Monday.
According to him, that was the death toll as at Saturday, January, 21, 2017 with others lying in very critical conditions.
Before Shehu’s comments, authorities had said about 54-65 people were killed.
But Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF, one of the humanitarian agencies which lost volunteers to the tragedy, said local sources confirmed over 170 dead.
Military authorities claim the accidental attack was carried out following an intelligence report about the movement of members of the Boko Haram sect in that region.
