UPDATE: LASTMA vehicle did not kill tanker motorboy

The State Government yesterday said that the mobile action that led to the lynching of a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer, Surajudeen Bakare, was uncalled for, disclosing that it was the driver of the tanker that killed his motorboy, who was sleeping under his vehicle and not a LASTMA vehicle as being claimed.

Speaking yesterday during a press conference, the Acting Commissioner for Transport, Prince Lanre Elegushi, said that the mob action that resulted in the death of the officer is one too many and Bakare remains a victim of a forceful takeover of roads by a group of people who desire to become a law unto themselves.“From the sketchy recount of the event and occurrences leading to the death, we must emphasize that LASTMA enforcement remains a routine activity designed to ensure free flow of traffic. Essentially, the administration of Governor Ambode is committed to civility in the process of enforcement. We are informed that such was the essence of this enforcement that has resulted in the death.”The Commissioner maintained that the officer was not culpable, he therefore called on the Nigerian Police to do a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book and justice is done.
