Lionel Messi’s 12-year professional career at Barcelona is set to continue with the star in talks over signing a new contract, according to reports in Spain.
Messi’s current deal is due to expire in 18 months but the Spanish giants are looking to extend his terms into the summer of 2022.
Barcelona-based newspapers Mundo Deportivo and Sport both lead with the story on Friday.
he Mundo Deportivo headline reads: ‘Messi forever,’ adding that ‘his father and agent, Jorge, is in Barcelona to negotiate a new long-term contract for Leo as they believe he’s going to be the best in the world for a while yet.’
Sport validates this by reporting: ‘Until now first contact had been made by telephone between [Barcelona president Josep Maria] Bartomeu and Messi’s father. However, a meeting is set to take place before the Christmas break, with Messi’s deal high on Barcelona’s agenda.’
Messi’s father landed in Barcelona on Wednesday with both he and the club determined to make ‘sure he is the best paid player in the world ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo,’ who penned a new £365,000-a-week five-year deal at eternal rivals Real Madrid last month.
Congrat Messi!!
