The Police Service Commission (PSC), yesterday, released names of successful applicants for recruitment into the Nigeria
Police, in the Federal Government’s 10,000 recruitment programme, with the North getting the lion’s share. In a statement issued in Abuja, yesterday, PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, said the new recruits comprise 500 cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP), 500 cadet inspectors and, 7,500 constables.
The breakdown showed that the North West, comprising Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto got the lion share while South East, with five states region got the least. While recruitment into the rank of constable was done on local government basis, with each council alloted nine slots, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) got 30.
However, that of the ASPs and Inspector were done on state basis. Each of the 36 states got 13 ASPs and Inspector apiece. Further analysis showed that Kano, with 44 local government areas (LGAs)got 396 constables, Bayelsa with eight councils got 72 and FCT 30.
At the regional level, South West, with 139 LGAs accounted for 1,251 out of 7,500 constables while South East and South South with 97 and 124 councils got 873 and 1,116, respectively. However, the 19 northern states- North Central, North East and North West with 115, 112 and 187 got 1,035, 1,008 and 1,683 respectively, which represents 3, 726 out of the 7,500 constables.
Conversely, the north topped the ASPs and Inspector as it got 247 as against 221 to the three southern states. Again, the North West with seven states led with 91 each while South East with five states got only 65. The other four zones with six states each got 78 each. He said names of the successful applicants have been uploaded on the websites of PSC and the NPF.
Ani stated that the commission shortlisted applicants who applied under some disciplines which required further professional and expert interview and listed them to include engineering, laboratory science and community health.
He said the recruitment was based on merit, federal character and geographical spread, adding that all successful candidates went through the required processes.
“These include state screening which involved the screening of credentials of the candidates and physical screening such as height, sight, chest etc.”
He said the commission electronically received 911,438 applications comprising 262,462 for cadet ASP, 211,832 for cadet Inspector and 437,144 for Constable. “A total of 338,250 applicants were later shortlisted electronically and invited for screening at the state commands of the NPF.
This figure was made up of 44,684 shortlisted for cadet ASPs, 87,736 for cadet inspectors and 205,830 for constables. This process was followed through from command to zone and finally, the national level, where the successful candidates were selected.”
