2018 budget: Uproar at House of Reps plenary over Buhari’s letter

The legislative chamber of the House of Representatives on Thursday went into a rowdy session after the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara announced the intention of President Muhammadu Buhari to address a joint session of the National Assembly alongside the presentation of 2018 budget estimate.

Before Dogara could finish reading the letter from the President, the lawmakers unanimously greeted it with the shouts of, ‘’no, no’.

It was observed that when the uproar which lasted for some 60 seconds went out, the Speaker reminded the honoruable house that they had no legal right to stop the president from addressing the joint session of the House and the Senate.

He said, ‘I wish we had the constitutional right to say no. But unfortunately, we don’t have it…This House is the custodian of the constitution. The President has the right”

Few hours ago, President Buhari had written a letter to the House of Representatives on the 2018 budget.

In the letter, the president sought to present the estimates of the 2018 budget to a joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, November 7.
