ENUGU, ENUGU STATE — The NDC Governorship Candidate for Enugu State, Sir Chinyeaka Christian Ohaa, has condemned what he described as the alleged harassment and extortion of motorists by the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS) task force yesterday at Otigba Junction, Enugu.
According to reports, the ESIRS task force, working alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), reportedly blocked the junction yesterday and allegedly demanded payments from motorists in the course of enforcing revenue collection.
Reacting to the development, Ohaa described the alleged action as an unacceptable display of hostility by government revenue officials towards the people they are expected to serve.
He stressed that taxation should be administered with a human face, transparency, civility and respect for citizens, rather than through intimidation, obstruction of traffic or alleged roadside extortion.
He called on the Enugu State Government to urgently review the activities of its revenue task forces and ensure that revenue collection does not become a source of hardship, harassment or fear for Ndi Enugu.
“Government exists to serve the people, not to intimidate them. Revenue generation must be lawful, transparent and people-oriented,” he said.
