The Delta State Police Command has said it has no clear explanation for the conduct of an officer captured in a viral video fatally shooting a suspect, an incident widely condemned as an extrajudicial killing.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, made the remark on Wednesday during a live interview on Channels Television, describing the case as one of the most difficult he has handled in his six years in public relations.

According to him, the command is still struggling to understand what led to the officer’s actions, adding that while the police cannot officially attribute the incident to spirituality, “it may not be far from it.”
The incident reportedly occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, when operatives attached to the Area Command responded to intelligence from members of the public. The suspect, identified as Mene Ogidi, 28, was said to have been intercepted while attempting to waybill a parcel allegedly containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Police said the team was deployed to apprehend the suspect, but the officer in charge, Nuhu Usman, allegedly violated Force Order 237 and standard operational procedures by discharging his firearm, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed that the officer has since been arrested and transferred to Abuja for further investigation, as internal disciplinary processes continue.
The video of the incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, prompting renewed calls for accountability within the force.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its stance against extrajudicial killings, assuring the public that due process would be followed in handling the case.
