Opposition Politics in Ebonyi State: A Tragedy of Lost Alternatives?

By Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh

There is a darkness hanging over Nigeria today! That heaviness that many of us feel in our bones. And for those of us in the opposition in Ebonyi State, that weight is even more suffocating.

We know that the only way out of this national decline is collective action. Yet when we look inward, when we examine the alternatives we are offering our people, what we see is not hope but fragmentation.

ADC: A House Without a Center

Take the ADC. What should have been a fresh platform has become a confusing mosaic of interests. A gathering of 2023 PDP remnants mixed with old political gladiators from elsewhere. And so, instead of a unified vision, what we see is a marketplace of ambitions.

Two major factions, each with its own sub‑factions, each pulling in different directions.
Dr. Jennifer Adibe represents one interest.
Barr. Silas Onu, shaped by his 2023 PDP role, represents another. H.E. Dr. Sam Egwu stands on yet another pillar.

Their meetings must feel less like political strategy sessions and more like an acidic Umunna gathering where everyone arrives with both a spoon and a dagger. Each person ready to feast if possible , and also ready to fight if necessary. How can a party divided against itself offer a credible alternative?

PDP: United, Yet Shackled

The PDP in Ebonyi appears united under one roof, but the roof itself is shaking from the storms at the national headquarters. The internal battles at the center cast long shadows on the states.
Still, Ebonyi PDP is fortunate because whichever way the national drama ends, the state chapter seems ready to remain intact. But unity without momentum is not enough. Stability without strategy cannot deliver liberation.

Labour Party: A Quiet, Steady Flame

Then there is the Labour Party. A party many assumed lost its soul when Mr. Peter Obi moved on. But that assumption is loudly rejected by those who know the truth. Because, under the example set by H.E. Alex Otti in Abia and guided by a Supreme Court‑recognized national leadership, Labour Party in Ebonyi has become a quiet but steady flame.
No factions.
No litigations.
No internal wars.

Just a focused team:
Comrade Splendour Oko Eze providing direction,
Dr. Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh offering strategic clarity,
and Engr. Chief Henry Udeh (AjimBest) anchoring the structure.

Their message is simple but powerful: Alaigbo renaissance must walk hand in hand with the dream of a new Nigeria.
With or without Peter Obi, they have a living example in Abia state under Otti. That proof that good governance is not a myth but a choice.

But then comes the real question: Can we rise above ourselves as opposition leaders in Ebonyi State? The answer unfortunately takes us to the painful heart of the matter.

Can the opposition in Ebonyi State put aside ego, factional pride, and personal ambition long enough to rescue the state from its current misdirection?

Can we learn from Ndi Abia, who set aside their divisions and rallied behind a single purpose to deliver Alex Otti? Who can lead the opposition coalition in Ebonyi State that we can trust is not a mole working for APC?

What will be the alternative if we fail and continue working the path we are currently walking?

The answer is too tragic to imagine. A scattered opposition, each in its silo, each convinced of its own importance, while a rampaging APC sweeps the field and bends democracy to its will. If we continue like this, we will not just lose elections. We will lose the future of Ebonyi State.

The time for unity is now.
The time for courage is now.
The time for alternatives that are real, not tragic is certainly now.

I hope I have responded to you my big brother Linus Abaa Okorie.
